I've actually never played an online FPS, and the last single player FPS I played was probably the original Doom. It's always good to experiment with new game mechanics though, so no health restoration at all might be interesting. Or shooting small animals for food or sucking health from opponents vampire-style. Depends on the setting...

Brawl is more of a party game than a fighting game... and even then, pretty much nobody plays seriously with items on, let alone items like Maximum Tomatoes or Hearts. Even the people I play with for fun don't like having healing items on.

You've never played an online FPS? You should really try at least one. Try that Modern Warfare port on the Wii. That's what I'm considering. Or just buy one of the bazillions of cheap shooters on the PC that are a few years old, perhaps Unreal Tournament 2004. (That deal may be ending tomorrow so best act earlier rather than later if you're thinking about it.)

I took his use of your avatar to mean Ness' absorbing technique, not items.

But, like he said, Smash is a platform fighter and doesn't take itself as seriously as traditional fighters, where there is no health regeneration.

I like the way it works in Borderlands; shields regenerate but health doesn't. You can get health regenerating shields, but they are usually much weaker than other shields and regeneration is slooow, so it is a choice with clear drawbacks. Health packs (syringes) are available but are also tiny. Basically you can balance it to suit your playing style. The same with the perks; you can choose some that regen health, or you can go for that tasty bit of extra damage.

In the end it doesn't really matter if a game has regenerating health, health packs or nothing at all; as long as it fits in with the game. If you drop health regeneration you have to balance the gameplay so it still will be playable (and fun). If it's a good game it just means that whatever options they have implemented works.

How'd I not think of that?

Exactly, that's why I posted it because his avatar was just perfect. And yes, Smash is a party fighter, but still a fighter.

Meh, I don't like shooters in general, and I also dislike "realistic" looking games, so it's pretty unlikely that I'll try one soon.

In good FPS games you are "dead" or a more correct term "put out of action" in one hit. I played those FPSs on PC when I still liked FPS games (FPS genre is stale and boring for most of us that where around when Wolfenstein 3D and Doom was the shit).

Dying to buy a PS3 for Uncharted 2 but my pride says no. And I still love EA.

They're still around - you just have to play the right gametype!

If you play regular Team Deathmatch in a game like MW2, then it takes a few shots to kill someone. If you play Hardcore Team Deathmatch, though, it's only 1 or 2 shots.

I would rather have no regen. But it all depends on the game and how the devs use it.
