Duke Nukem Forever shipping in 2011 on 360, PS3, PC
By Tor Thorsen, GameSpot Sep 3, 2010 10:51 am PT 109 comments PAX Prime 2010:

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford confirms that his studio has taken over the long, long, long-awaited shooter, which will be playable on the PAX Prime floor.

Yesterday as part of his prolific Twitter stream, 3D Realms president George Broussard posted a cryptic picture of pigs flying. Today, the reason became clear. At PAX Prime in Seattle, Gearbox president Randy Pitchford took the stage to announce that his studio has taken over Duke Nukem Forever, which had been in development at the now-all-but-defunct 3D Realms since 1997.

Speaking to a shocked and enthusiastic crowd, Pitchford said, "We can't let the Duke die, right? The guys at 3D Realms who put their hearts and souls into this, so we wanted to make sure it hits all the platforms. It's coming to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC in 2011."

Pitchford also told the Wall Street Journal that Gearbox took over the game in late 2009, following the quasi-closure of 3D Realms and tit-for-tat lawsuits between 3D Realms and Duken Nukem Forever publisher Take-Two Interactive. "Clearly the game hadn't been finished at 3D Realms but a lot of content had been created," he said. "The approach and investment and process at 3D Realms didn’t quite make it and it cracked at the end. With Gearbox Software we brought all those pieces together. It's the game it was meant to be."

Duke Nukem Forever is playable on the PAX Prime show floor.

Scott Miller, owner and CEO of 3D Realms, also reflected to the Journal why his studio failed to complete the game. "We were probably too much of a perfectionist about the game. When some other game had some great feature come out, we wanted to match it…We'd been distracted on other games like Prey. It was a combination of those things. We were trying to build a game that was too great."

Duke Nukem Forever isn't the first Duke Nukem game that Gearbox has worked on. In June, court filings in the Take-Two Interactive lawsuit against Duke Nukem Forever developer 3D Realms (incorporated as Apogee Software) revealed that another game featuring the first-person shooter icon was in the works at a "well-known game developer" as early as 2007. That mystery developer was, in fact, Gearbox.

The Duke Nukem-Gearbox connections don't stop there. Before forming Gearbox, Pitchford worked at 3D Realms on an expansion for Duke Nukem 3D for the PC. (The game was rereleased in 2008 as an Xbox Live Arcade title.) "People like George Broussard and the 3D Realms team are the reason I got into gaming," said Pitchford during today's speech.

Funny enough, April 1st is Friday, normal UK release date. They should hit that up.

Gearbox head Randy Pitchford says that a preview of the 2011 360, PS3, and PC shooter is "important," currently working on timing with publishers.

Duke Nukem Forever, a game long dismissed as vaporware, materialized in a big way at last week's Penny Arcade Expo. In a lavish surprise unveiling, Borderlands' Gearbox Software announced that it had taken over development of the game, which had been in development at the quasi-defunct studio 3D Realms since 1997. According to Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, Gearbox has also bought the Duke Nukem intellectual property outright and will develop all future installments in the franchise.

Gearbox is already laying demo plans for 2011's Duke Nukem Forever.

Not only was Duke Nukem Forever unveiled at PAX, but it was also playable in demo form on the show floor. And although the game won't be released until 2011 on the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Pitchford told UK gaming site VG247 that he is already looking at ways to release a demo to the millions of gamers who weren't at the event.

"I think that is an important thing to do," he told the site. "Now that the cat's out of the bag we can actually make those plans. Now we can get with retailers and figure out the launch window, and figure out demo timing, and work with the first-parties on that. We weren't able to do that until this point."

As outlined in GameSpot's hands-on preview from PAX, the game will feature the crude humor and hectic action that are the franchise's hallmarks. For more on Duke Nukem Forever, watch GameSpot's interview with Gearbox's Pitchford below.

Balls of Steel Edition

Duke Nukem Forever CE detailed - News at GameSpot

Duke Nukem Forever CE detailed
By Alex Sassoon Coby, GameSpot UK Posted Feb 11, 2011 5:21 am PT "Balls of Steel" edition to figure a Duke bust, playing cards, casino chips, and more.

Duke Nukem Forever is coming out this May, and 2K Games revealed today that the oft-delayed title is to get a collector's edition. The Balls of Steel edition, as it is known, will include a range of gewgaws and Duke Nukem paraphernalia. No price has yet been announced, but 2K has confirmed it will be available alongside the standard edition, on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

The Balls of Steel edition in all its glory. The 2,000 figure on the certificate is just a mock-up -- there is no word yet on how many will actually be made.

Among the items bundled with the long-missing game are a bust of the titular hero, a set of playing cards, dice, and two casino chips. A comic and hard-cover art book also await those who splash the cash for this edition, along with a numbered certificate of authenticity. The official images of Balls of Steel edition clearly show that the run will be limited to 2,000, but 2K Games has confirmed to GameSpot that the run will not be this limited. The publisher did not confirm how many would be made.

Duke Nukem Forever spent most of its development cycle under wraps at 3D Realms before Gearbox Games' Randy Pitchford unexpectedly announced his firm had taken the project over in 2010. First announced in 1997, Duke Nukem Forever is a sequel to 1996's Duke Nukem 3D.

The title is due to be released on May 3 in the USA and on May 6 in the rest of the world. It has been rated M by the ESRB, MA15+ by Australian censors, and 18+ by European group PEGI. For more on Duke Nukem Forever, see the latest trailer below, or read GameSpot's hands-on with the game's first 90 minutes.
