Default Metal Gear: Peace Walker is a 'MGS5-class game' says Kojima: new 'evolving' features

Source: gamepro

Today, Konami Digital Entertainment released a Q&A interview with the Metal Gear series creator, Hideo Kojima in which he spoke about 2010's Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP.

Many have been wondering what the heck is going with those upcoming Metal Gear titles. At E3, Hideo Kojima, the series creator/ director/ writer, revealed a trailer for a game entitled Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker for the PSP. The trailer showed Naked Snake (A.K.A. Big Boss) in a tropical setting, sneaking around with what appeared to be three other identical snakes.

Obviously, many questions and theories popped up in the trailers aftermath, and while Kojima isn't ready to explain that little bit of information, he was willing to sit down with Konami for a Q&A and discuss the upcoming stealth-action adventure.

When asked about the title and its origins, Kojima explained that he's been working on the project since Portable Ops and intended for the next generation of Kojima Productions creators to take over. But, working on the title changed his mind about that decision, saying:

"...in the end, I felt that it was still a little too early to leave it completely in their hands, so I decided to take the reins."

In reaction to those anticipating a Metal Gear Solid 5 title, Kojima stated:

"This game is an MGS5-class game. I am supervising, designing, producing, directing, and editing this title together with the MGS4 team. Therefore in that sense, "METAL GEAR SOLID" has not ended, and the "METAL GEAR SAGA" continues."

Kojima also revealed that the latest installment will be a bit of a departure from the other titles, citing its new "evolving" mechanics, and re-playable story:

"The story can be replayed numerous times and the game is full of challenges to complete, so I feel that this title will really satisfy players with its long-lasting play time. Just as an example, do you recall the cardboard box at the end of the Peace Walker trailer? In addition to that two-man box, we are preparing a variety of other different cardboard boxes this time around.

To give a little more insight into the game, you can, how shall I say... customize Snake according to your preferences and determine what kind of soldier you will use prior to embarking on your mission. For example there's heavy gear configurations that make a lot of noise, but that allow you to equip numerous weapons. Or, there are other configurations that won't allow you to carry many weapons, but will allow you to be light on your feet. We will be preparing a variety of other types as well. Being able to make decisions and plot a strategy will be one of the really enjoyable features of this title.

We are also working on a "growth feature" as well, where your character evolves. It will be a new type of system, so I hope everyone will look forward to it!

This "growth feature" seems like an exciting addition to the series, as it will be fun to customize Snake even further in various configurations. Overall, the title is looking like it could be a pretty epic Metal Gear adventure for the PSP.

Oh, and for those wanting to know what all those symbols and numbers were about on the Kojima "Next" teaser site, here are the answers:

5=it is an MGS5 class game

S=Snake

??snake in Kanji

E=E3

R=Raiden

3=3 from 360 and E3

6=6 from 360

P and S=PSP and adding 3 makes it PS3

Aside from the Snake and Raiden visuals, we featured a total of 10 "symbols" and when all of these are rearranged, they form connections to the announcements that we made at E3.

The first symbols that appeared were the number "5" and the letter "S" for Snake that represented PW which, to me, is a "5" class title. "?" not only hints at the lowercase lettering of "E" for E3, but it is the kanji for the word "snake." Also, the symbol that appeared at the very end is the kanji "?" and represents a sunny background and the sunrise that links to RISING.

The "RISING" of "METAL GEAR SOLID RISING" implies "the sun rising," "the sun shining," and "the sun shining on Raiden" that was revealed in the visuals on the HP. In addition, "RISING" also represents how "METAL GEAR SOLID" will be taking the next step up.

Going back to the symbols found on the HP, they also link to "the day of 360" and also to each of the titles that we announced at E3. When each of the symbols are rearranged, I think you'll be able to recognize E3, PSP, PS3, 360 and others. So everyone, how did you like it? Were your predictions on the mark?

So, at least we now know something about one of the titles. Metal Gear Rising still remains a bit of a mystery, but that's what Kojima is all about.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker will be available in 2010, as well as Metal Gear Rising.

Not at all. Hideo Kojima and the MGS4 team? It'll be PSP GOTY, if not a nominee for overall GOTY.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Playable At TGS 2009? 2 Comments Posted Today 12:35 PM - By Billy Berghammer

While the latest trailer for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker just being shown at the Konami Press Conference at GamesCom, we’ve caught wind that the game will see its first playable debut at Tokyo Game Show 2009. This isn’t all too surprising, however. Historically, a Metal Gear Solid game will see a short trailer debut at E3, then at Games Convention in Leipzig (now which is GamesCom in Cologne) see an expanded trailer, and then the following Tokyo Game Show that same game will be playable. History will most likely repeat itself again this year.

Walking through the business center today I ran into Mr. Kojima, and told him I heard that the game would be playable at Tokyo Game Show next month, and he laughed, and said, “Yes. If it’s ready.”

Will history repeat itself at Tokyo Game Show? I’ll put 1,000 yen that not only will the demo be on the show floor, but we’ll probably get to try out the new cooperative play. Personally, as a huge Metal Gear Solid fan, I cannot wait.

G4 will be in full force at this year’s Tokyo Game Show at the Makuhari Messe, in Chiba Japan from September 24-27, 2009.

Many people are left wondering about Peace Walker and rather or not its worth picking up. Well Kojima has all the answers to ensure you that Metal Gear Solid : Peace Walker is what the fans want for a 5th Metal Gear Solid.

Yesterday Kojima explained that he chose to do Peace Walker exclusive to PSP instead of porting it to PS3 as well for friendly reasons. Explaining that with PSP you can get up and go to a real friends house to play the co-op portion of the game, instead of jumping online and not fully interacting.

Today via an internal magazine from Konami at Gamescom, Kojima explains even more details. First off he explains that Peace Walker has so much content within it that it will “require hundreds of hours to complete”. Being the story is taking place 10 years after MGS3, thats understandable.

So why is Peace Walker the "true" MGS5?

“The main team from MGS4 is participating in the development of this title and I am involved in all aspects of the game, ranging from design, direction and scenario writing.”

“Despite being on the PSP, we don’t plan on making any compromises with the graphics. The art team is used to producing PS3-level quality and the results will make you wonder if this is really a PSP game.”

He also states that the Peace Walker's storyline is too meshed up with the series and the new Kojima staff couldn't understand things correctly. Noting that Rising takes place in a distant future of the franchise with little to no ties to the past games, allowing the new team to be more creative and begin to understand a new story, while the MGS4 team can focus more on Peace Walker. Maybe when Peace Walker is done the team can work on a PS3 titile while the new team continues Rising? Who knows, but Peace Walker is sure sounding good right now!
PS3center.net - Story: Kojima: Peace Walker in MGS4 Quality

As I predicted, Rising has nothing to do with the past games.
