Epic Games Wows With Stunning iPhone App Epic Citadel

Leave a Comment Posted 10 minutes ago - By Jake Gaskill

To generate a bit more buzz for Chair Entertainment’s newly announced iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch exclusive “Project Sword,” Epic Games has released a free tech demo called Epic Citadel. The Unreal Engine 3 powered app, the world's first in fact, lets users wander through a gorgeously rendered medieval town filled to the brim with remarkable detail--birds chirping as they circle above, yellowing leaves blowing in the wind, sweeping vistas of the cliff-side kingdom, the glaring sun peeking through fluttering flags, etc.
What's even more remarkable is that the app was built in just eight weeks by a small team of Epic developers. Most impressive. Here’s little walkthrough video we put together for those of you can’t check out the impressive demo first-hand:

Crazy, no? Between Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 and what id Software is doing with the iPhone version for Rage, which blew everyone’s jaw away during QuakeCon a few weeks back, it’s safe to say that the line between console gaming and mobile gaming, especially in the graphics department, will continue to grow fainter and fainter over the coming months and years.

This actually looks very promising.

EDIT: If this turns out as good as it looks, I might actually strongly consider buying an iPad

Or an iPod touch
But if you want an iPad, I have one and I love it, then wait for next year's. The iPad is not just a bigger iPod touch, there are things that can be done on it that are impossible, or at best extremely awkward, on the iPod touch. Though with Yesterday's iPod touch update Apple made the iPad seem so behind. The new iPod touch has two cameras, FaceTime and 2x RAM, and somehow managed to make it even thinner.

If I had to choose, i'd choose the iPad because if this tech demo is anything to go by, I would want the larger screen :P But i'll wait and see, if big name devs take the iPad/iPhone/iPod seriously and release great exclusive games for it, i'll buy it. I would miss physical buttons though, but for me it's not the hardware that determines wether I want to buy it or not, it's the games.

One thing I absolutely hate about it though is the fact that it's downloadable games, it's pretty annoying being a collector and not having physical copies.

To me this already happened and it is why I'll always have some iOS device with me. I'm thinking of skipping the iPhone and just get an 8GB iPod touch for times when the iPad is too big/heavy.
If there was only some way to sync save states between iOS devices.
  1. Final Fantasy
  2. Final Fantasy II
  3. Chaos Rings
  4. Crimson Gem Saga
  5. The War of Eustrath
  6. Phoenix Wright
  7. SimCity Deluxe
  8. geoDefense
  9. geoDefense Swarm
  10. Fieldrunners
  11. Vay
  12. Command & Conquer: Red Alert
  13. Espgaluda II
  14. Baseball Superstars 2010
  15. iFighter
  16. Ridge Racer Accelerated
  17. DoDonPachi DaiFukkatsu
  18. Phantasy Star II

And soon Final Fantasy Tactics War of the Lions and Story of Mana.

That's the bad thing about a yearly update. The 2nd gen was only two years ago :\

I don't think anyone here would have thought there was any possibility of you not loving it.

Epic seem to really know how to milk every last drop of graphical power out of a device.

Its simply jaw dropping on a portable device. It is making me reevaluate whether to do the 3DS or just get an 8Gig Ipod Touch. I have kept a strong streak of never buying an Apple product, but now more than ever that is threatened.
