Default iPod touch: 45 million sold so far

AppleInsider | iPod touch represents 38% of iOS devices sold by Apple

Quote:
"It's become the number one portable game player in the world," Jobs said. "It's amazing. The iPod touch outsells Nintendo and Sony portable game players combined. It's been amazing."
Here's to hoping for more serious games on iOS

Atlus how about an SMT port for iOS, you can't let Square-Enix and Sega run with all the iOS RPG money

It took Apple 3 years to sell ~45 million, amazing!

Jobs is a mook because not everyone is buying these things to play games so the numbers are irrelevent. Let's see them release a dedicated gaming device and see how many units it ships.... probably millions due to the drooling masses.

As a Sony fan you should know better, it is not as if all PSP owners use them to play games, or PSP games.
I believe the increase in high quality titles, whether developed for iOS or ported from DS/PSP, proves there is a lucrative market for iOS games.

At least in the US, iOS games revenue passed the PSP.

I'm sure half of those games are $5 breakout/poker/chess games. Easiest money ever. I've got to get in on that market.

You're going to have to back that up with some decent sources, because I'm pretty sure the vast majority of PSP owners bought their PSP to play games.

Software sales and attachment rate?

Maybe in 2008, but if you look at the app store top sellers now it is a different story.

Link me to them.

Also, what are you suggesting? People buying a PSP as a portable video and music player? If you're not interested in games, you can get that for half the price of a PSP.

Dying to buy a PS3 for Uncharted 2 but my pride says no. And I still love EA.

Attachment rates aren't a good indication since the PSP is so heavily pirated. It's so easy to get free games for that thing.

But Jobs is a dope because like Pirate said, as many probably buy a Touch to store music as those who buy it for games. That's like saying the 360 is the best selling DVD player.

Yes. I know many people who did just that, though that was before the iPod touch was out. I understand it is not representative of the entire population.
Sony did imply in many ways that the PSP is the Walkman of the future. So a comparison against the iPod touch is fair.

What can you get that does everything the PSP does for half as much? Nothing I'm aware of The iPod touch does more but costs more The cheapest Zune HD is $160, it does everything the PSP does for about the same money, not half as much and has about 3 games.

Of course piracy plays a huge part in it, the other part is the many people who use it as a portable emulator for PS1 and SNES games rather than PSP games.

Of course but yet, in the US at least, it passed PSP game revenue when games for iOS are a fourth to half the price of the equivalent PSP title (games like gta:Chinatown and Final Fantasy for example). So iOS is moving lots of games.

Apple iPhone and iPod touch Capture U.S. Video Game Market Share

Code:
Total Portable Sales: 2008= $2.25bil; 2009=$2.50bil
iPhone Game Sales: 2008=$0.12bil; 2009=$0.50bil
PSP Game Sales: 2008=$0.45bil; 2009=$0.28bil
DS Game Sales: 2008=$1.69bil; 2009=$1.75bil
You can bet 2010 will be even bigger for iOS, it has become common to see +$5.00 on top, with many $9.99 games making it near the top.

Well, you should have said that in the first place!

It isn't a huge surprise, especially if that's just in the US. The PSP is practically dead here. I think I bought more games than the PSP sold in 2010.
