Look at that monstrosity. Too big to carry around. You'd need a Triple X Fanny Pack.

Just out of curiosity what are you planning on doing on this laptop specifically? IMO if you are just going to type buy a cheap ass laptop. Thats what i did when I needed a school laptop. After all....how much processing power and memory do you need to save word documents? Though if you really want something nice I say pick up the macbook. |

I'd rather eat my gentlemen vegetables than buy a Macbook.

Do any of you guys think that the anti-virus protection is the deal breaker in this??? MacBooks have it standard, on PC's I have to pay like a $100 a year for protection... |

Macs have no AV standard, but they are far less prone to viruses. The only major "breakout" was a trojan in pirated versions of iWork found on piracy sites. If you know where you are getting your software from, you'll be safe. I don't have AV software on mine and been safe, something which can't be said about Windows. Though you can get excellent free AV for Windows. Microsoft Security Essentials is a superb AV and is free.

$100 a yearfor antivirus? You're being ripped off. I think the most expensive Norton I saw was $100, but there were plenty below that - with the cheapest being something like $30.

Or he can get Microsoft Security Essentials which is a superb AV and is free. Or just get a Mac ![]() JCRCrasyz it is your decision in the end, but viruses shouldn't be the deciding factor. I buy Macs because I think (i.e. onion) they provide a better computing experience, better built, better looking and last longer. I believe (i.e. onion) Mac OS X is a far better OS than Windows could ever be. But that's obviously subjective. Over 90% of the world population disagrees with me. Yet somehow Mac users are called sheeple :\ The world can never be fair. The scary part is not that over 90% use Windows, but over 50% still use a 9 year-old OS!!!! Most Mac and Linux users are running latest or just previous release. Tiger 2005 Leopard 2007 Snow Leopard 2009 This reminds me of something. My father is an avid Windows users and refuses to try anything else. I once asked him why and he said that he likes to follow the majority, and since the majority chose Windows that what he did. He always had a herd mentality ![]() I, on the other hand, not only a Mac user, but my main machine runs Debian (a GNU/Linux distro) and I've fiddled with lots of Other OSes. The majority isn't necessarily right. Try telling people in the 1600s that the Earth isn't the center of the universe. Oh and Hitler won in a democracy, and so did Bush

I used to frequently build computers for family and friends, and the best solutions I've always recommended was to make the computer a dual boot machine. Only use Windows XP to play video games and iTunes And when you want to browse the internet, restart the computer and select to boot Ubuntu, use that instead. If there is a special website you need to go to that doesn't support the Ubuntu OS, go back to Windows and only navigate and do whatever business you need to do ONLY on THAT site. Doing this will cost you nothing. AV software like Norton and such only bloats your OS resources I have no problems with Apple computers. I do enjoy using mine for work and general purpose. But if you're on a tight budget, you don't have to break the bank by paying for the Apple premium prices. Just do what I suggested. Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu PM me and I'll be glad to help or give advice on how you should install it.

Good idea domokunrox, even better let them install IE using Wine (it does run), this way if they get a virus through IE it wont run on Linux/X/GNU. Ironically, I do have an installation of IE6 (best supported) on my machine using Wine. Sometimes IE does become necessary.
