At worst, it doesn't even have to be connected to the controller.

Just in case any of you are considering a 7.1 system, I found a list of PS3 games with 7.1 support which may interest you.

7.1 Surround Sound Game Titles - PlayStation Lounge - PlayStation.com Forums

Bigger list than I thought, actually. I'm considering a 7.1 system around Christmas.

Symptoms:
Switching off randomly, blinking red light
No great amounts of heat on the console its self
Slow scrolling of items on XMB
Freezing both when loading a game via disc and when sitting on an icon on the XMB

Diagnosis:
It is overheating and it's fried something

Solution:
Call Sony ASAP and get a replacement.

I'm really tempted to abandon the 60GB and see if they'll send me an 40 or 80GB instead.

Once my refurbed 60GB died on me as well that was enough for me and I moved on to the 80GB. I miss the 4 USB ports more than I miss the BC. I just lost a lot of faith in spending $150 more when the refurb I got only lasted 7 months.

Mine only lasted 3... funny enough, it's three days out of warranty. They didn't dare ask me to pay though.

If there's any issues with this, I'm going to request a 40 or 80, because I change the HDD anyway, I don't play PS2 games on it and I only use 1 USB at a time. Reliability is the name of the game and the 40/80 are both quiter and more reliable... I might just steal my brother's PS3.

Doesn't exactly restore my faith in the quality of the refurbs they do.

So for some reason all of a sudden whenever I plug in either of my guitars it assigns them to controller port 7 and I have to manually reassign it to controller port 2 to use them. It just started since I got GH Metallica.

It was the latest firmware update. Buzz, Guitar Hero, Rock Band peripherals used to default to 1 when they were plugged in, meaning you had to change the controller port for every other game. Since the last firmware, peripherals default to 7. I thought they were supposed to work in channel 7.

It sure doesn't work in GH Metallica. I had my Rock Band guitar plugged in first and when it didn't do anything I thought maybe they were trying to force you to use GH guitars, so I plugged that one in and still nothing. At least the GH guitar has the controller port lights on it, so I noticed that 4 and 3 were lit up, so I reassigned to port 2 and that fixed the problem for both guitars.
