XBL has been $50 since 2002 or so. And you don't live in the US, where just about every bill for any service has been rising exponentially for the past several years. Frankly, it's amazing this hadn't happened sooner.

But how did I get in the position of defending the price hike? I never said it was a good thing, only that people are blowing it way out of proportion. And most of these are probably the same people who waste their money and all kinds of stupid things. These are video games we're talking about - not some charity service. If UNICEF wants to get into the video game business, then we can talk about cheap and prices made for the poor. Until then, it's greedy companies like MS and Sony that we'll have to deal with - companies that want to make money. If you honestly believe you're exempt from price hikes or any of that sort of thing because you're affiliated with Sony over MS, then allow me to have a hearty laugh in your general direction.

You guys have your PSN, and you don't even live in the US, where this increase is most damaging. Why do you care so much?

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony's PSN+ had something to do with this, tbh. MS probably looked at that robbery of a service and realized that XBL was offering much more than that for the same price.
