It's the Xbox controller with a twist! As indicated by our source, Microsoft has announced a redesigned Xbox 360 wireless controller. The new gamepad will debut in a matte silver color with gray-toned face buttons and analog sticks with a more dramatic concave shape. Key to the new design is a "transforming" D-pad that changes from a semi-flush disc to a pop-out plus sign by twisting the D-pad clockwise. (Check out Major Nelson demonstrating the transformation in the video after the break.)

Microsoft offers this suggestion for how you might use the two D-pad configurations: "Select the traditional plus for distinct cardinal direction movement in games like Halo: Reach to change weapons and perform complicated combinations and deadly finishing moves in Street Fighter games, or rotate the D-pad to the disc format for sweeping motions in games such as Pro Evolution Soccer 2011."

The redesigned controller will only be available with the Play & Charge Kit. The bundle will launch on November 9 for $64.99.

Without colors how can I tell which button to press? many games rely on colors.

They should color code keyboards too, I never know which buttons to push.

Many games they show you blue, red, green or yellow button to press, but now they are all various degrees of gray. Sorry but that can be very confusing.

Keyboard buttons never had colors associated with them, but the XBox's controller face buttons did.

I agree with E6600, they should have kept the colors. Especially for games with QTE's.

Stupid that they released this thing now.

Should have either been released with the S, or saved for the next Xbox.

Other stupid choices made:

- Silver. Their main colour is black now. Why go silver?
- Grey buttons? What. The. Fuck.
- Glossy chrome dpad. Yay, smudges abound!
- Play and charge being bundled. I have enough of these things, fuck off.
- Price. $65US means we'll be getting it for like $80AU plus. Fuck off.

Seriously, fuck off on this whole thing. 4 years too late.

Oh, the face buttons are gray. Didn't even notice that, so I had no idea what the heck you were talking about (so I went to my default sarcastic mode because I was tired + in a bad mood, sorry).

The 360 should have followed the example of the almighty Gamecube controller, which avoids even the possibility of this issue by making the face buttons different shapes and sizes. The shape of the Gamecube's Y button is unmistakable and a difference you feel with your thumbs. Much more intuitive. 'Course it makes the controller look stupid, but I don't care.

Actually the SNES, the so-called best controller ever created, had two shades of purple for its face buttons... at least in NA.

And what's with all the dumb play & charge kits about nowadays? Do people still not own rechargable batteries?

Why not just make the d-pad sensible instead of this twist nonsense? No reason to drop the coloured buttons either.
